Area of Room
The area of the room in Sq. Ft. determines the amount of flooring to order, as well as the quantity of underlayment, adhesives or other required materials. it also tells us how much flooring needs to be removed.
Perimeter of Room
Hardsurface floors tend to expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity. Expansion gaps should be left around the perimeter of the room to allow the flooring to expand and contract without causing buckling or other damage to the floor.
Trim (e.g., quarter round or shoe mold) is placed around the perimeter to hide the expansion gap. New trim is required because the existing trim must be removed before the new flooring can be installed.
The perimeter of the room determines the amount of trim required.
Transitions
When new flooring is installed, it is necessary to use transitions (such as Threshold or Reducer) in Doorways and Openings to "transition" from one room to another room or adjacent area with different flooring.
For example, a T-Mold is used to "transition" from a hardwood floor in one room to a tile floor in an adjacent room.
The Total Width of Doorways and Openings helps us determine the amount of transitions required.
